CoSeC announces winner of Impact Award 2021

The CoSeC Impact Award for 2021 has been awarded to Ryan Warr, a PhD student at the University of Manchester, Henry Moseley X-Ray Imaging Facility.

Ryan obtained first place for his application describing how the core imaging library (CIL) – supported, developed and maintained through CoSeC – enabled his research concerning the advancement of hyperspectral X-Ray computed tomography (CT) for lab-based imaging.

Ryan attended training schools run by CoSeC and CCPi  helping to increase his understanding of advanced functionality available within CIL. Using this training and with the support of CCPSyneRBI (CCP for Synergistic Reconstruction for Biomedical Imaging), Ryan has been able to pass on his experience in using the CIL software tools.

He demonstrated his own application of them during his presentation to the (twice-yearly) meeting of the CCP Steering Panel where he was invited to present his work to the Chairs and project leads of the CCPs and Research Councils: STFC, EPSRC, MRC, BBSRC, NERC, ESRC, and JISC.

The title slide of Ryan’s talk he gave to the CCP Steering Panel: ‘Improved images in the 4th dimension – enhancing data quality in bioimaging’

Ryan was warmly welcomed by the panel and thanked for the accessibility and high standard of his talk, reflected in the large number of follow-up questions he received from the audience.

Ryan’s research concerns the advancement of Spectral X-ray Computed Tomography imaging techniques, and his  application described how his research, enabled through the Collaborative Computational Project for Tomographic Imaging (CCPi),  aids the precise identification, visualisation and analysis of materials, enabling advanced imaging across fields including medical imaging, geology and security scanning.

First launched in 2020, the CoSeC Impact Award serves a dual purpose: to raise the awareness of the people comprising the project ‘CoSeC’ and their work supporting the Collaborative Computational Projects and High-End Computing Consortia (CCPs, HECs); and to acknowledge the achievements of Early Career Researchers who have benefited from CoSeC’s community support.
